The Pub |
 |
The Barrels
has existed as a Public house since at least
the 1790s. Taken over in 1986 by Peter Amor
the pub quickly became one of Herefords most
popular watering holes. It also became the
home of the Wye Valley Brewery. |
|
Mentioned
in the Lonely Planet guide to Great Britain
as a " must for any visitor to Hereford "
the Pub is known for its " welcoming locals
as permanent as the wallpaper ". Eclectic in
its attitude and clientele The Barrels is a
second home to many people. Whether you need
a quiet pint while reading the paper, a game
of pool or table football (The Barrels is
home to 3 of the top 10 players in the
country and also boasts the ladies national
champions) , if you want to sit in the
cobbled courtyard and enjoy a summers
evening or you want to join in with the
numerous bar room philosophers, The Barrels
is the place to be. |

The
Beers |
|
CAMRA pub of the
year 2004 The Barrels is the flagship of the Wye
Valley Brewery and offers the most extensive
range of their beers. These award winning ales (
Dorothy Goodbodys Wholesome Stout was Champion
Winter Ale of Great Britain in 2002 ) have the

 |
|
quality and variety to quench any palate.
Rightly proud of this heritage, the Wye Valley
Brewery was founded in 1985, The Barrels carries
out a policy of offering only quality brand name
products. Put in a nut shell if the beers are
this good then everything else should be of the
same quality. When you drink in the Barrels,
whatever your tipple, you know you will be
drinking the best! |

The Music |
 |
Good Beer good
company and of course good music. The
Barrels picks its music carefully aiming to
offer quality original music across the
spectrum. The Beer Festival of course is the
major musical event launching local bands
|
|
like
"Take It To The Fridge" offering good live
music at every session even boasting amongst
its regular performers two hit wonder John
Otway.Throughout the year music goes on in
the pub with acts as diverse as Australian
bluesman Stringybark Macdowell, the soulful
Arnie Cotteral and the Swedish rockabilly
Arthur Ebeling. The first Wednesday of every
month is also host to an informal jam
session in the 69 bar where local musicians
sit round drink some beer, and a little
whiskey, and entertain themselves, and us.
In the summer months The Barrels also puts
on one off specials in the back yard. Last
year the highlight was anarchist poet and
general establishment baiter Attila the
Stockbroker and American protest singer
David Rovics. Variety and quality is what we
like and that just about sums up the music
and the pub. |

The
Festival |
|
Since 1987 " The
Barrels Formation Drinking Team ", a group of
people who couldn't think of a better way to
raise money for charity than sit around and have
a drink with each other, have organized and run
The Barrels Beer Festival. |
 |
|
Firmly established
as one of the social events of the Hereford
calendar the festival is not to be missed. In
its 17 years the festival and other associated
events have raised in excess of £90,000 all
going to provide support for people in Hereford.
Happening over the August Bank Holiday the
festival is a mix of quality real ale, last year
over 60 varieties were on offer, beer quenching
burgers, 700 sold, four days of live bands,
comedians, mime artists, fire eaters,poets,
fiddlers, Morris men and of course The Barrels
bar staff performing their version of `New York,
New York'. This year the festival will be 18
years old and Dorothy Goodbody, born on the very
first day of the very first festival, will be
having her first ( legal ) drink there and like
any 18th birthday party it's going to be the
best festival yet. |
